A New Mortal Kombat Movie is Coming
There is a new Mortal Kombat movie in the works and unlike Mortal Kombat 11, that is riding an extremely high wave of success the movie is probably going to Suck.
So let's rewind back a few years, It's 2010 and Kevin Tancharoen has made a short film called Mortal Kombat Rebirth which featured Jeri Ryan as Sonya Blade and Michael Jai White as Jax, it was a pitch for WB for a new Mortal Kombat Movie that he accidentally uploaded publicly to YouTube.
It was extremely well received and even Ed Boon noted that it was awesome. Due to the successful nature of the short and the public reaction for how true the Karacters were to their digital Kounterparts, Warner Bros. were onboard with making a movie as well as Midway at the time but New line Cinema who holds the movie rights however decided against it.
Warner Bros. and Midway was still sold on his vision and eventually decided to give him the go ahead to do a Web series released on Machinima as Mortal Kombat Legacy.
New Line Cinema eventually got on board alongside Warner Bros. on September 29, 2011, and they announced that Kevin Tancharoen had signed on to direct a new big-screen adaptation of Mortal Kombat on a $100 Million budget, but he backed out of the projek in October 2013 for unknown reasons.
Fast forward 6 years and a new Movie is in the works again with James Wan (Furious 7, Aquaman, lots of scary movies) producing it and New comer director Simon McQuoid.
Eurogamer Reports that the New Movie however will centre on a new Unknown Kombatant Cole turner (ALARM Bells ringing whyyyyyyyyy). Cole is described as "a Philadelphia boxer that is recruited by a prophecy chaser to compete in a fantastical tournament - the outcome of which determines the fate of Earth and its inhabitants". Established Mortal Kombat characters, such as Kano, Sonya Blade and Raiden, are also set to appear.
The movie is currently in pre production in Australia.
