Summer Games Done Quick 2018
The speed running festival Summer Games Done Quick starts today @ 6:30pm. During the event speedrunners from all over the world will be showcasing there insane skills as they try to beat a variety of games as quickly as they can while the world watches, all to raise money for charity.
In case you've never heard of Games Done Quick here's a short overview from their website:
Games Done Quick is a series of charity video game marathons. These events feature high-level gameplay by speedrunners raising money for charity. Games Done Quick has teamed up with several charities in its seven-year history, including Doctors Without Borders and the Prevent Cancer Foundation. We are currently the largest fundraising event globally for both charities!
To date, Games Done Quick has raised over 14 million dollars for charity. We also average over 1800 people in attendance at our events, including staff, volunteers, runners, and attendees just looking to have fun and support the event!
I watched a couple of the speedruns during the Awesome Games Done Quick event at the beginning of this year and found it really enjoyable. Whether it was a game that I knew and had played or some obscure game played on a console from ages past, the skill and dedicated-practice on display was enthralling. I was in awe of a co-op run of Contra that was completed in mere minutes, where the players had to have precise timing and carefully manage the amounts of bullets on screen so as to avoid lag on the old Nintendo system.
During this years SGDQ you'll be able to see the latest DOOM reboot executed in under 50 minutes, see the childhood classic Sonic the Hedgehog 2 finished in a "supersonic" 25 minutes or witness just how bad you are at the infuriating Getting Over It as it is simply done in under 5 minutes! The schedule is now available so take a look and see when your favourite games are being streamed: SGDQ2018 Schedule
The event runs 24/7 from 24 June to the morning of the 1st of July. You can watch the stream live on Twitch or catch up on the recordings later on the YouTube channel. Be warned, however, watching the event can be extremely addictive and you could find that hours have passed by before you know it!
