Ukrainian game developers

Ukraine has been invaded by the Russian Federation. This is a look at the game development companies that come from Ukraine and some of the impressive franchises that have emerged from that nation.

4A Games

4A Games is the developer of the well known Metro Series.

Founded in Kyiv by three developers that left another Ukrainian company, GSC Gameworld, the headquarters have since moved to Malta since the Russian Federation annexed Crimea.

Beatshapers

Primarily developing on consoles and the Apple ecosystem. Beatshapers are one of the first companies that worked in Virtual Reality. They aim to push interactive entertainment mediums to their limits.

They have ported many games and have original IP of their own as well.

Frogwares

Frogwares created the best selling Adventures of Sherlock Holmes series. They have also released an open world game, The Sinking City, inspired by H.P. Lovecraft.

Founded in Kyiv by French expats, hence the name of the studio ties into the slang name for the French.

GSC Gameworld

GSC Gameworld is best known for the Cossacks and S.T.A.L.K.E.R series.

Originally the studio was set up to localise games to the Russian language. It re-oriented its primary market to the west after an economic crisis in Russia. GSC Gameworld tried to get a contract to develop Warcraft 3 but was rejected by Blizzard Entertainment, Blizzard considered the CEO's youth a negative.

While S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl is scheduled to be released on 8 December 2022, this date could change due to the Russian Invasion of Ukraine. GSC Gameworld has posted on their website asking supporters to donate to the Ukranian Armed Forces.

Vostok Games

Another company that was founded with the off-shoots of GSC Gameworld. Working with investors from both Ukraine and Russia the company attempted to get funded for a game on the scale of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. This funding didn't happen and the company lowered its ambition to develop a free-to-play multiplayer shooter game called Survarium. They then went on to develop a Battle Royale FPS called Fear the Wolves.
