Kalypso Media has announced that they have obtained the rights to the classic real-time tactics series, Commandos, and that they will develop new games in the series as well as re-release some of the older games on current platforms.
Along with Commandos the publisher has also obtained the rights to the other games developed by Pyro Studios, Praetorians and Imperial Glory. They have not announced any plans for new games or ports/remasters of these titles at this time.
It is still unclear specifically which classic Commandos games will come to which of the current platforms, but it's probably safe to assume that we will get remasters of the original trilogy and not the first person title, Commandos Strike Force.
According to PCGamesN no developer has been announced for the re-release of the older titles or the new title that will be developed but the founder of Pyro Studios, Ignacio Pérez said:
"We have been looking for a suitable partner for the continuation of our products and brands for a long time. Kalypso has great expertise and experience with rebooting well-known titles, and we are delighted to have our IP in such good hands."
Founder and managing director of Kalypso Media, Simon Hellwig, also added:
"We have great respect for what the Pyro Studios team have accomplished and created throughout the history of the studio. We see it as our responsibility to revive and further develop these beloved games for fans around the world. Of course, this will include the development of a completely new game for all platforms, but also an extensive adaptation of the existing titles for contemporary technologies and platforms. We’re incredibly excited about the opportunities, and will begin speaking to potential development studios in the near future."
I remember the first Commandos came out when I was in high school and it was very popular for its tactical gameplay among the "nerds" of the day. I was pretty terrible at the game myself so I never got into it that much, but it's great to see such a well received classic series getting some love in 2018, even if I'm not a fan myself. If they bring the remasters to the Switch I might be inclined to give them another try though.
I'm sure there are lots of gamers out there who are very happy with this announcement. Now we just have to hope Kalypso gets a developer that is up to the task of bringing these classics into the modern gaming age.
